Wind and water damage historic Fort Mifflin

Fort Mifflin was built on Mud Island in the 18th century, and this unique location continues to present challenges today. The January 9, 2024 storm brought the full fury of Mother Nature to bear on a place that is essentially a monument to perseverance and ingenuity.

We anticipated and prepared for routine limited flooding but there is no way to prepare for the wind gusts that blew the roof off the circa 1814 Officer's Quarters compromising the entire structure. In addition, the tide spilled over the top of the sea wall, flooding the Parade Ground, parking fields and inside the Hospital Building. The tide continued to batter the site the following day.

We need your help. Expenses for immediate stabilization will be followed by the even greater expense of necessary restoration. Be a part of keeping the "Fort that Saved America" standing to tell the story of the greatest bombardment of the American Revolution as we approach the upcoming anniversary years.
